Donald Trump has openly accepted improper gifts which common people understand to be bribes.
Why has that not been enough for Congress to move to impeach and remove him from office despite the fact that bribery is an explicitly impeachable offense? In some part that is because Trump has been using his power of executive order authority to undermine bribery and corruption law. If you think that is something Congress members dislike, you would be wrong. Of course they are excited about a lack of enforcement from the Department of Justice – now and in the future – on corruption related charges.
The main problem that we are facing is the fact that nobody in the elected class or journalistic/broadcaster space can explain how Trump getting bribed is specifically linked to activities that undermine or degrade American interests.
They’re out there.
But the sophistication of those schemes is too much for the current leading voices to articulate well enough that anything can be done about it.
There is a voice which could articulate these things and organize appropriate action. But that is a matter for the people and elected officials within both political parties to decide whether they are humble and willing enough to accept such help.
On February 5, 2025 just weeks into the second Presidency of Donald John Trump, author and activist Matt Berman wrote and distributed articles of impeachment. These were submitted to various Congressional chiefs of staff, American journalists, and even members of the Canadian Parliament. It took several months for these to circulate and eventually be plaigerized by some of the least popular members of the Democratic party like House Reps Shri Thanedar and Al Green.
0 members of the press and 0 Canadian government officials made mention of Berman’s attempt to rally the American people around him as a citizen with keen insight and analysis that was missing from the public discourse. Since then, some of the other writing on Write In Freedom have had equal or greater impact in terms of slowing down or stopping the corrupt Trump administration.
However, if the continued efforts from Democrats goes towards invalidating Mr. Berman while absorbing and disabusing his artful communication, the Trump contingent of Republicans will get away with more of the worst of their impulses and agenda.
Understanding how the tool of impeachment was blunted by corrupt Democrats and Republicans over the last decade is critical to repairing our broken democracy.
Article I, Section 2, Clause 5 of the United States Constitution states that, “The House of Representatives shall chuse their Speaker and other Officers; and shall have the sole Power of Impeachment.” In the context of this authority, there are at least (4) impeachment article filings against Donald John Trump:
Other motions or movements to remove Donald Trump from office have come about so this list may not even be exhaustive. The thing to remember is that none of these attempts have been fruitful from the perspective of actually removing Donald Trump from office. In fact, in the history of the United States of America, no President has ever been removed from office via the impeachment process.
The first President to be impeached by the Congress was Andrew Johnson. What articles were brought against him? Essentially he was threatened with removal from office over the improper removal of cabinet officials. Primarily, he was accused of violating the Tenure of Office Act by attempting to remove Secretary of War Edwin Stanton. He was acquitted by the Senate and ultimately was not removed from office.
A little over 100 years from this point, the next American President was impeached. That was Richard Nixon in 1973. Rather than go through the process of a formal trial, Nixon chose to resign from his post.
President Bill Clinton was impeached in 1998 in a fairly convoluted scheme related to perjury about his affairs in office. Regardless of how many people felt at the time, he also was not removed from office.
Then came Donald John Trump, in 2019, who was impeached under the auspices of a lot of different charges related to a phone call and military financing decision(s) he made as they pertained to providing weapons assistance to Ukrainian President Zelenskyy. Though this captivated the nation heavily for many months, it was known early on in the process that it was mostly a political stunt by Democrats. With a Republican majority in the Senate at that time, the majority of politically literate commentators or operatives at the time knew Trump was not going to be removed.
That didn’t stop Democrats from doing something similar, with even less actual evidence, again in 2021 after Trump actually *lost* the election.
Needless to say, impeachment is known as a very serious tool.
But Congress sucks at wielding it and they have a 0% success rate.
That is largely why people think Trump *can’t* be impeached again even though actual articles of impeachment have been submitted for Congressional review.
Senators and House Reps who have led impeachment charges in the past have discredited themselves and the function of impeachment. People like Jerry Nadler, Nancy Pelosi, Adam Schiff, Chuck Schumer, and now Shri Thanedar, Al Green, have cheapened impeachment until it is virtually worthless. Rather than being a priceless mechanism that preserves democracy, they have tried to ruin it. The people may need to invent some other mechanism to hold them all accountable now.
